United Airlines saw the resumption of its flights to Israel in February

US carrier United Airlines is expected to resume flights to Israel in February, according to industry sources. United stated in response that “our flights to Tel Aviv remain suspended at this stage,” but the likely date for resuming service is believed to be February 22. Currently, tickets for flights to and from Tel Aviv cannot be purchased on the airline’s reservation system.

In normal times, United operates 28 weekly flights from Tel Aviv: 14 to New York, and the rest to various destinations in the United States, including Chicago, Washington and San Francisco. On October 7, 2023, the company suspended its activity in Israel, and renewed it in March 2024 with only seven weekly flights to New York. Following the Iranian attack on Israel in April, another wave of flight cancellations began, with United joining in, but returning to Israel shortly thereafter, in June. The company continued its work until the end of last July, but the escalation of fighting in the north then prompted it to announce the suspension of its services until further notice.

If it resumes operations in Israel, United will join Lufthansa, Air India, Air France and British Airways, which have already set dates to resume their flights.

Earlier this week, US Senator Ted Cruz claimed that US airlines would resume flights to Israel within thirty days. In an interview in Washington, Cruz announced that the suspension of flights was, in his opinion, for political motives and not for security reasons. He said airline employee unions were involved, especially the flight attendant union, which has expressed anti-Israel views. Cruz, who is set to become chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, said he could take steps to ensure flights resume, and that the matter would be resolved by the end of February.

United’s rival Delta has said in the past that it will not resume flights to Israel before April 1, 2025, but is now considering moving forward with the move. Tickets are available for Delta flights to and from Israel from April onwards, but since the airline has not officially announced that it will actually start operating again as of the supposed date, travelers are hesitant about booking.

There is optimism in the industry that Delta’s return will go ahead at least as planned, in April. Before the war, American Airlines was also active in Israel, but announced that its services would remain suspended until further notice.
