Colombia’s president says he won’t accept US deportation flights

Leftist Colombian President Gustavo Petro said Sunday that he will not allow deportation flights of American migrants to enter his country’s airspace.

“The United States cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals. I prevent American planes carrying Colombian migrants from entering our territory,” Petro wrote on X, adding that they would only be accepted after Washington establishes a protocol that guarantees “dignified treatment” of Colombian migrants. immigrants.

Petro added in a later post that he “returned American military planes that were arriving with Colombian migrants on board,” without providing further details.

Agence France-Presse was unable to obtain immediate confirmation from the United States that deportation flights to Colombia were being prevented.

Petro’s statements come a day after the Brazilian government similarly expressed its anger at the administration of new US President Donald Trump over the treatment of dozens of Brazilians who were deported from the United States.

The migrants were handcuffed on the plane in what Brazil described as a “flagrant disregard” for their basic rights. Petro said he would allow US civilian flights carrying deported migrants as long as they were not treated “like criminals.”
