Canada spends nearly one billion dollars every year to fight forest fires, with indirect costs much higher due to damage to property, evacuation, health expenses and economic losses in sectors such as forests, energy and tourism. Moreover, these wild fires are not commensurate with indigenous population societies in remote areas, which constitutes an estimated 42 % of fire evacuation operations in the forests despite being 5 % of Canada’s population. This solution aims to save life, land and property by discovering forest fires.
“The discovery of forest fires is one of the most influential satellite capabilities, as it provides great benefits for public safety, environmental health and economy,” said the Tirisa Condor, CEO of Spire Global. “We are proud to work with the government of Canada, which paves the way for the development of the forest fire control system from the next generation to protect its citizens and societies.”
Spire agreed to design and develop custom satellite constellation. Ororatech has agreed to develop the detection of wild fires that will be published on satellites, as well as building and processing the data processing system. These loads have already provided data during Canadian fire emergency situations, as OOROTECH provides detection and management services to the Forest Forestry Authority in Quebec, Société de Protection des for forums Contre le Feu (Sophieu).
To connect this contract, Spire intends to expand its current Canadian office in Cambridge, Ontario to add manufacturing and satellite testing equipment, allowing the manufacture of forests and future missions locally in Canada.
“Spire and Ororatech are pleased to support the government of infrared camera technology that was proven and based on data processing, providing exceptional images to detect wild fires, management and response,” said Martin Langer, CEO of Ororatech. “We are particularly proud that this will help indigenous communities throughout Canada to respond effectively to these natural threats, protect their societies and their way of life.”
Spire and Ororatech cooperated with the Waks Mne – Science and Culture in Alexis Nakota Sioux.
The mission of wild forests is a joint initiative by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Canadian forest service in Canada (CFS), the Canadian Center for Maps and Earth Control (CCMEO), the environment and climate change Canada (ECCC). This task aims to provide data on the behavior of the Hashim, smoke and air quality fire, targeting a large gap in the current satellite coverage. By focusing on the “peak burning period” late in the afternoon when forest fires are more intense, forest fires aim to enhance decisions to respond to forest fires, reduce losses and protect societies.
